Federal Council appoints new member to FINMA’s Board of Directors
The Federal Council has elected Aline Darbellay to the Board of
Directors of the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA.
From 1 January 2025, the renowned expert in financial market law will
succeed Susan Emmenegger, who is stepping down from FINMA’s Board of
Directors at the end of the year.
At its meeting today, the
Federal Council elected Aline Darbellay as a new member of FINMA’s
Board of Directors. She will take up her mandate on 1 January 2025 for
the remaining ordinary term of office of FINMA’s Board of Directors
until the end of 2027. Susan Emmenegger has been appointed Dean of the
Faculty of Law at the University of Bern and will therefore step down
from FINMA’s Board of Directors on 31 December 2024.
The Chair
of FINMA’s Board of Directors, Marlene Amstad, comments: “I am

expertise and experience. ”
Aline Darbellay is a Professor of
Law at the University of Zurich. She has more than 15 years’
experience in research and practice in commercial and financial market
law. Born in French-speaking Switzerland, she studied law in Lausanne
and obtained her doctorate at the University of Zurich. She then went
to the USA, where she obtained an LL. M. and was admitted to the New
York State Bar. The 40-year-old then worked at Baker & McKenzie, at
the District Court of Horgen and as a lecturer at the University of
Zurich. In 2016, she was appointed Assistant Professor of Banking and
Financial Market Law at the University of Geneva. Since 2023, she has
been an Assistant Professor at the University of Zurich, holding a
chair in commercial and business law, specialising in banking and
capital markets law.
FINMA’s Board of Directors will
accordingly comprise the following nine members with effect from 1
January 2025 (term of office from 2024 until 2027): Professor Marlene

The Board
of Directors is the strategic management body of FINMA. According to
the Financial Market Supervision Act, it notably determines the
strategic objectives of FINMA and submits them to the Federal Council
for approval. It also decides on matters of substantial importance and
issues circulars and the ordinances delegated to FINMA. The Board of
Directors appoints the Chief Executive Officer, subject to approval by
the Federal Council.
