Beware of fake news and project claimed to be related to HKMA

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has received enquiries from the public regarding fake news related to the HKMA, claiming an individual in charge of a poverty alleviation project met with the Chief Executive of the HKMA, Mr Eddie Yue, and discussed poverty relief funds.

Relatedly, a fraudster impersonating HKMA staff contacted members of the public, claiming to be responsible for disbursing poverty funds under the said project, and demanded him/her to top up a certain amount to activate designated accounts in order to receive the funds.

The HKMA wishes to clarify that the above news and content are all fake, and its staff will not contact members of the public regarding personal financial matters.

The HKMA has reported the cases to the Hong Kong Police Force. Members of the public who suspect that they have become victims of fraudulent acts should contact local police or the Commercial and Technology Crime Hotline of the Hong Kong Police Force at 2860 5012 for further action and investigation by the police.
